Steep bank grass cutting

Hi all.

I've been asked to take on a regular grass cut on a large area steep bank - approx. 50 - 60 degree slope. The client has said that it has been maintained before by strimming it, which takes approx. 1.5 hours. Her husband had been doing it with a petrol Stihl strimmer but now has knee joint problems!

I was wondering about purchasing a hover mower to do this - perhaps just standing at the top and lowering it down with rope..... I've looked at petrol models but they seem to have a max. slope capability of 45 degrees so I presume they would cut out on me with this angle. Do you think I could use an electric model plugged into a generator on the top of the bank?! Would this get around the angle problem? Any one with a bright idea or who does similar work and give me a tip or two, it would be appreciated!

Thanks

Andrew

Strimming by bar the fastest and safest way to do this.

We do many riverbanks and amenity bankings like this on a regular basis.

'Flymo on a rope' trick dangerous and illegal now under health and safety regs (as you have to disable the OPC control to use it like this).

Below is one example of several that we do....is this similar to what you are looking at?3314766685?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024

    • Thank you for your quick response! I didn't realise the old trick was illegal so much appreciated. The bank is at least 3 storeys high as the property has been built into the side of a large steep hill. I'm guessing I would have to harness up and be attached to climbing rope pegged at the top to meet Health and Safety regulations...it is a fair bit steeper than that in your photo!

p.s. never use the time a client tells you it takes to base your quote on ;) They run to a different clock. Base it upon what you think.

IMO - that's too steep to be safe. There are now quite strict / best practice rules about the max angle bank you should (commercially) work on:

I think the only hover mower that used to be capable of this was the Allen 440 (?) with a GX honda engine that could deal with these angles.

Whatever you end up using make sure it's dry I do 1 steep bank on the edge of a cemetery not sure of the angle but if it's even a tiny bit wet it gets left for another day as its really slippy when any water is on it.
    • good tip Richard! Let's hope for another dry summer ahead!

  • Sheep? Double the benefits. Grass kept short and lamb chops. :-)

Possibly even better - treble the benefits - built in recycling (inc fertilising) ;) ?

    • lol....now how would you charge for those?! ;-)

      • But joking a side, in the USA farmers rent out goats to help clear gorse bush and other waste land etc.
