Standing area for a car

I have a customer who I have been cutting the lawn. Last week he asked me if I would lay 60 paving slabs so that his car could go on it when the council have done the drop kerb. He has the idea that a dry mix sand cement then a waker plate used a sheet to be laid to stop weeds then the paving slabs. I said that the paving slabs would not take the weight. He said the path at the side has the same slabs and the car has gone on it with no problems. He said he has already got the paving slabs he would provide all the materials waker plate cement mixer. how long would it take to do the work and the cost of labour he seems to think from other work he has had done labour £1500.00 What are members views on this.regardsColin

A wide berth on this one if the customer is supplying goods and dictating grounds work.....

All the hallmarks for future trouble...?

A dry mix will not work. It will look ok for short while and then when it subsides, it will be you he comes after...

If you are not sure the correct method, go look here - it is well documented at: www.pavingexpert.co.uk
  • Run for the hills on this one Colin :-) There is so much more to take into consideration maybe suggest a suitable local LJN member and take a finders fee?
  • Hi Colin

Is this area hardstanding at the moment or garden soil?
  • Hi again Colin

Just seen the other replies after submitting my last reply, I would agree with Gary and Graeme.
  • Your customer is telling you to do the job in a way that just will not work. It wouldn't be good enough for foot traffic let alone cars. If you don't feel that you have the experience to do this job properly you really shouldn't attempt it and you certainly shouldn't be taking direction from your customer.

Tell your customer to get a professional hard-landscaper to quote for the work and explain how they are going to undertake the job and the reasoning for their methods. As Graeme suggested, try finding a local LJ'r with the requisite skills and negotiate a finder's fee.
  • All our drive ways have at least 6" of MOT Type 1(crushed granite) as a base that is then compacted down using a pedestrian vibrating roller, The customer may think its ok but if you are in any doubt..dont do it!!!! I have just turned a patio down that the customer wanted laid just on sand.
The customer is not always right!!!!!!!!- you can check out my web site for more info:

  • Any thoughts on where the surface water will be directed once the client has the hard-standing installed, as the area is above 5sqm the SUDS regulation instantly comes into play.

    Good luck
