Staff and Mobile Phones

Hi allI have a couple of members of staff and they use their own mobile phones to speak to me regarding jobs when I am on one site and they are on another. At the moment my staff use their own handsets but I do not know how to reimbuse them for their phone calls (or what might happen if they break their phones whilst at work!)I was thinking of getting two mobile phone contracts (with insurance). Does anyone else do this or should I get a couple of cheap pay as you go handsets and top them up occasionally? In my contract of employment I have said to staff that they might be provided mobile phones and that they would be personally liable for handset damage and for non business calls. Are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of?Thanks in advance for you help?

  • A few years ago, each van was issued with a company mobile but the times they got lost and other issues it just wasn't worth the hassle / cost.

Now they use there own and a few beers at the end of the week more than makes up for the calls they make.

If you did issue company mobiles it would mean them having to carry two because you can't stop them using their personal mobile regardless of what rules you lay down!
  • check out bt mobiles, you can have 3 handsets, blackberry last time i looked, choose your private minute package, shared between phones......now the good bit, free calls between these phones,wi-fi,internet,emails,and you can have free calls i think,to about 6 landlines(best check)
  • When I worked for a firm we used our own mobiles but all we did was 'one ring' the foreman who had a works phone and then he would ring us back using the works phone.

Thanks for all of your advice. I think I will get the staff to use their own phones and pay them with beer and the occasional top-up vouchers.

I agree with BGS that the likelyhood of them getting lost/trashed or even forgetting to keep them charged is too high to consider and that the would prpbably prefer to carry around their own handsets anyway.

    Cheers :)
  • Too much hassle to account for and monitor. Depending on usage its better to up their salary by twenty quid a month on the understanding that they're always available and charged up during working hours. If they claim to use more, the onus is on them to prove it with phone logs. What's a hassle for employees is carrying two phones, one private & one work and remembering to keep both charged.

I would avoid supplying mobiles if I were you - more hassle than it is worth.

I have had some bad experiences with abuse of our company mobiles.

I won't go into all the details but two particular instances, one guy was caught with our mobile in one hand and his own personal mobile in the other. He was sending text with one and receiving with the other - apparently to save time :-0(((

The other was an employee who has spent eight hours in one week calling ACAS because he was unhappy at being told that he was not entitled to the holiday pay that he had not accrued after handing in his notice.

One other point is that an employee will not always hear the works phone but you can be certain that they will answer their own:-0))
