Graeme, have you been into Aitkens in Govan? Suppliue to many golf courses and so on. They have a warehouse full and an online catalogue so you can check out their ranges.
A good quality slow-release Spring/Summer fertiliser will do fine, it may have quite a high N value, but is designed to release it over time and not it one hit like the garden centre 3-in-1 stuff. I recently used some organic Viano Mo Bacter feed and moss remover at the customers request and I have to say I’ve been very impressed with the results - the grass looks lovely and green and very healthy.
Iron is good for a quick green-up, but it doesn’t promote lush growth.
Hi Dan no haven't heard of aitkins I will Google them and see I am near strathaven and Smellies there do fertilisers but have not had the time to go in and pick their brains
Sean Clarke I used mobactor a few years ago and it did a good job but is really expensive as I found I did need to apply the maximum dose to get an effect. I like the concept as it looks to be blood fish and bone with added bacteria which is quite natural
organic Viano Mo Bacter feed and moss remover -- sounds intresting -- does it actually 'digest' the moss ?
Yes, but only if the moss isn’t too bad, best used in conjunction with scarification if the moss is quite bad.
Hi Graeme, after a few years of using the stronger, slow releasing fertilisers I have switched in recent times to a brand called Marathon Sport. I use the Marathon Sport Spring (NPK is 16.4.8 + 2 MgO and 0.5 Fe) once or twice over the Spring and Summer and then the Marathon Sport Autumn (7.0.21 + 2 MgO + 0.5 Fe) once later in the year, I've found they give excellent results. I particularly like them as the really improve the appearance of the lawn, lovely and green, without giving that big flush of growth that makes the lawn difficult to cut which I used to find the stronger feeds gave.
Morning, i would suggest opting for a mini-granule compound fertiliser. That way it will help avoid any un-even distribution and striping or scorching. I would also look for either a slow or phased release with NPK + magnesium or sulphur. We have a product which releases over a 3 month period and contains 18-3.5-8+Mg which is very popular with a few on here. If you wanted a cheaper option you coul opt for something like a 10-4-4+fe+mg+ca.
Both of the above are in 25kg bags and are mini-gran compounds. Bulk discounts as well as Trade Silver terms available, let me know if you want any more info.
Graeme, was it yourself I met in MacDougall mowers once a few years back?
It's entirely possible in there often today included
