soil/grit natural pointing

Hi,

I know I may get laughed out the pond here. When laying any paving I normally use a wet cement mix although will be looking at how well brush in ones work in future but thats a separate thing.

I need to repoint an old patio at a lovely old cottage and although the client wants to have all the gaps filled up they do like all the moss/weeds that have collected on all the firmer areas so instead of cement I was thinking about putting in a soil and grit mix and packing it in tight therefore providing a joint but still encouraging the old cottage garden appearance. I was taught to do this years ago by a landscaper but have never done it since.

Do people think that is enough or should I just have it all out and put in decent pointing. They are elderly so stability on the slabs is an issue.

Thanks,

Matt.

  • I've seen a similar thing done - the joints ARE pointed but the top INCH is left void and filled with a sharp sand / clay mix (about 50/50) It drains freely, and dries out in summer but is enough for things such as Valerian, Bellis and some sedums to survive in - looks very nice.

Key thing is to make sure the pointing underneath is 100% and to seed what you want on, so you get the look.

A little high on maintenance but should hold fine, and it looks amazing if done tight and right.

  • Ah right so put in proper pointing underneath. Good idea as this will help stabalise the slabs whilst they still get the natural look of whats there. Really is important they dont rock as they are very elderly clients. Thanks for your help, will look into the clay option then. would it be clay straight out of the ground I guess? I should contact some digger friends maybe.
