I am looking for a small, compact, lightweight strimmer that is battery powered for small garden edging - I already have a Stihl FSA60R but its just a bit to powerful and unweldy for some of the smaller, finnicky edging.

The strimmer MUST have variable speed trigger (this is where my biggest problem in finding one is) so I can slow it right down when near windows etc.

It must have batteries that are replaceable (not inbuilt).

1.6mm or maximum 2.0mm line diameter

I dont care if its a cheapie non branded from Argos, B&Q, Aldi etc or a Husqvarna, Echo etc (it wont be a Stihl as unfortunately they dont do a smaller strimmer that has a variable speed control trigger than the FSA60R).

Any suggestions?

  • Hi your FSA60R is on the AK battery system? I use the AP system Stihl FSA85 which is just the ticket for the jobs you describe. Which offers infinitely variable speeds from barely turning, upwards. Mine must be about 10 to 15 years old now ( I have a couple of that model). The only maintenance has been a new spool when it eventually wears out. Fantastic piece of kit. Light weight, like an extension of your arm for fast, neat, precise work. Used most days (I have much more powerful battery strimmers also). Discontinued, but second hand ones are available.

The Toro 51835T looks to have variable speed around £149 for the bare unit then add battery and charger which fit their other cordless kit  .

I only ever use edging shears these days around patio windows ,conservatories and parked Tesla's .

    • Yes, it runs on the AK battery system. It does also have a variable trigger but it is very sensitive and quite tricky to hold at a very low speed.

      • Stihl introduced the AK system some years after the AP system, which to be fair wasn't really selling in the numbers they might have hoped at the time, the idea presumably to kick start sales with a less expensive battery range, can't blame them for that. Inevitably a lot of the components are lower budget, that over sensitive trigger comes down to the quality or set-up of the motor controller in the machine, they have moved towards higher output brushcutter-y type machines which as you have discovered are not ideal for all applications

  • If they are only small areas could you use edging shears? We do and there is something rather therapeutic with going back to basics ! You need to buy CK or similar and spend upwards of £60 for decent ones that stay sharp.

  • Have a look at the Ego St1400. Cracking piece of kit with 2 power levels and variable trigger which is easy to hold at extra low speed. Well balanced with either 2.5Ah or 4.0Ah batteries. Can take 1.6mm up to 2.5mm "string"

The only thing it doesn't have that I wish it did, is a reverse switch, to allow the rotation direction to be changed.
