Slitter or scarifier?

I'm in the market for a scarifier and have read with interest the recent posts.

Many of the machines for sale - and for hire locally - have what I am calling a slitter blade, knife type thing that will dig into the surface. Good for drainage but I'm thinking also not good at raking. Surely will also cut the grass plant roots?

In my book a scarifier has a raking action with tines.

I.am drawn to the Hyundai as it has both. My main task is moss removal on big private lawns.

Thoughts please?

  • A scarifier with what you describe as having knife type blades, is far more effective at removing moss and thatch than the spring tine type. We have just bought a Stihl petrol scarifier which has the blade type tines and scarified 200 sq MTs which hadn't been touched for years and had 8 1 tonne bags of moss and thatch , so highly effective at moss removal. The blade type also has the added benefit of pruning the grass roots encouraging tillering which the spring tine type won't.

The Hyundai has variable reviews if you search the net, I'd buy the Stihl

  • You want a powered lawn rake, a scarifier does exactly want it says on the tin - scarifies the ground. I actually object, quietly to myself, to lawn rakes which are marketed as scarifiers.

I have a machine which uses either a swinging-blade scarifier cassette, or a spring-tined rake cassette. The cassette is swapped depending on the job at hand. I also use an Atco Balmoral with a raking cassette, it does a lovely job of clearing dead moss and debris from the lawn.

  • The idea is that it does dig into the surface and also cut the plant roots. If you are not seeing any markings on the surface of the soil there's very little point.
