How long are the sleepers them selves? If they are 2.4 and you dont want loads of wastage everywhere why not just cut them in half and bury the 70cm in the ground. over kill but saves wasage.
If 3m sleepers cut into 3 and put 50cm in the ground as well as above.
hi there,
thanks for reply they are 2,4 i was thinking of useing 3x800 and having 300 in the ground? they are only for a flower bed so wouldnt be retaining alot in water waight etc. i would also be using c20 ready mixed concreate.
it is difficult to get a specification on such a thing but i have seen so many failed sleeper walls i am very weary
Hi James, I always line my raised bed with plastic or membrane, have you considered using those tar sleeves like for fence posts? You can buy them in rolls. Last horizontal sleeper wall I built I used concrete spur repair posts for longevity. I appreciate that won't work for vertical sleepers.
Hi dave,
Thanks for your reply. I always use a thick gauge dmp on the back of the sleepers and have used the post savers before as there very good!
My question is more related to the deph of posts rather than to how to insure longevity.
thanks again,
James
This is the book I use to standardise my work. Its a recognised source of architectural construction method.

Have a look at paving expert website, there's a section on sleeper retaining walls. You could tie the sleepers together with metal straps.
