Hi there,
If it was me I'd put in a proper sub base and lay my slabs accordingly. Then break out the squares afterwards , and haunch them with a mortar.
Hope this helps
Paul
Dont put sharp sand down, and no dab and dot. Dig 3-4" down, then lay each slab on a solid bed. make sure they understand that it won't have the integrity of a proper patio. It could look ok if planted with something like creeping thyme, anything else and the paving will just disappear as the planting flows over.
as tim says solid wet bed maby mixed with a bit of pea gravel might help
