Slab laying.

Hi, a friend has asked me to lay some slabs in a chess board 'hit and miss ' fashion so there will be 13 slabs and 13 gaps. They will want to plant things in the gaps so I don't really want to stone the whole area down as a sub base. The ground is currently quite firm soil so I was thinking level the current ground out, lay sharp sand and compact down, then lay the slabs on sand/ cement spots. The slabs are basic grey slabs nothing fancy. Do you think this is the correct way or have others done it differently? Any advice greatly appreciated.

  • Hi there,

If it was me I'd put in a proper sub base and lay my slabs accordingly. Then break out the squares afterwards , and haunch them with a mortar.

    Hope this helps

  • Dont put sharp sand down, and no dab and dot. Dig 3-4" down, then lay each slab on a solid bed.  make sure they understand that it won't have the integrity of a proper patio.  It could look ok if planted with something like creeping thyme, anything else and the paving will just disappear as the planting flows over.

  • as tim says solid wet bed maby mixed with a bit of pea gravel might help
