Always tricky, this kind of thing.
It's best to let your insurance deal with it. That way it shouldn't get too emotional and you can focus on the client's project.
For me, what to do initially, ie going down the insurance route or not, would depend on whether you believe you're liable or not i.e being negligent by securing the signboard inadequately, or leaving it free standing when windy conditions were forecast?
The extent of the damage to the car, whether a minor scratch and cheap to put right or not, and the value you place on maintaining a good client relationship would also be factors to consider.
Difficult one, whatever the scenario, so good luck!
I agree with Brian, the excess is often more than the damage caused.
I broke a bespoke window with a stone off the Strimmer a couple of months back,
Value of window + fitting £244.00...... My excess £250.00.......... I'll get my cheque book then!!!
Would agree with others if it can be fixed at a reasonable cost without involving insurance that would be the best option but it depends on cost !
It's all a learning curve and nothing makes us learn quicker than being hit in the pocket!
Agree with Brian, however if its a tasty car then i wouldn't expect them to allow chips away to do the work. They would likely want it to go to a professional body shop.
