  • Amber Alert of Wind28 Oct 2013, 00:05
    Issued at - 26 Oct 2013, 10:53
    Valid from - 28 Oct 2013, 00:05
    Valid to - 28 Oct 2013, 21:00

A very intense low pressure system is forecast to run northeastwards across the country early on Monday, bringing the potential for an exceptionally windy spell for southern parts of the UK. At the same time, persistent, heavy rain could cause some surface water flooding, while the winds will lead to some very large waves around our coasts.

There remains some uncertainty in the timing, intensity and track of the low. However, the public should be prepared for the risk of falling trees as well as damage to buildings and other structures, bringing disruption to transport and power supplies.

  • I'm sure everyone is currently aware of the latest forecast / severe weather warning for the UK relating to the 'St Judes' storm that is predicted to hit the UK on the 27/28th of October with media reports hinting that it may be the Worst Storm in Years.

Currently here in the Midlands the winds are picking up with the odd moderate gust but the weather is mainly dry and bright with the odd cloud.

Personally I'm making preparations to remove anything from my garden that may cause damage during any strong winds. I also have my chainsaws sharpened and ready should my neighbours require assistance due to any falling trees that may occur.

  • It would be good to know what conditions are currently like for our colleagues in the South of the Country where conditions are expected to be most severe.

  • its very windy!

we have a weather warning system in place down here as well

Outlook = some leaves are being blown about a bit, you might get some extra calls to clear them. Best get some extra rubbish sacks and check leaf blower is functioning correctly. The cat wonders what all the fuss is about as he looks through the window

Advisory = some of the rickety cheap diy superstore fencing is starting to get blown and rattle. You may get extra calls to fix them, but not replace as owners were to cheap to get decent stuff in the first place and definitely wont replace if possible to fix. Best check you have a few bits of lap panel laying around to be re-used for repairing dodgy cheap fences. The cat thinks twice before going out through the cat flap for his business

Watch = decent fencing is starting to go and the plastic patio furniture is getting blown around the garden. Expect calls to replace decent fences, dropping all other work you have in an instant and come round to repair because the cat might get out of the garden. Best check you still have some fencing in stock and be prepared to rescue patio furniture from odd places as a would you mind just favour for customers. the cat looks out of the window longingly to go out to do his business, but decides its far to windy so will wait it out.

Warning = fences down, trees down and lots of other damage in the garden. Expect the phone to ring off the hook. Ensure you have the chainsaw sharp and ready, and make sure you have the mobile number for your long serving suppliers ready as all the instant fencing experts (or is that cowboys) will clear all the shelves of everywhere else in an effort to make a quick buck. At this point you are glad the van is sign written and you've got some accreditation to get through the police road blocks! Expect to find patio furniture in very very odd places, along with cheap garden sheds, accompanied by comments from female customers of "I told him to screw it down, but did he listen!". The cat has given up and found your neatly piled up chainsaw workwear by the door ready for the morning and could wait no longer.

I think we are at watch level down here and the cats are about to get forced out in readiness!

Hampshire County Council's advisory - useful reading:

    http://hantsweb-staging.hants.gov.uk/storm-message

  • Well at the time of writing it is now )1.22hrs in the West Midlands area. The wind is light and rain is moderate. Forecast is that the bulk of the storm will hit over night and during Monday morning. If it wasn't for the forecast tonight would just seem like a normal night.

I wish everyone a safe day!

The Met Office has reported the hurricane force winds of 92mph have hit the Isle of Wight

It looks as though the Rage of St Jude may well be on its way.....

I certainly think there will be plenty of work on its was too for many of us. As Thermo says, fences, trees, damage etc.

  • First phone call of the day customer with 5 panels down on their fence !! arrived at scheduled customer of the day and a mahooosive beech tree had thrown a limb across the drive had to chop it up from both side with a 18 inch bar on and even then only just got through it, been at it all day it will take most of tomorrow too..twas a biggun !!!!!!

  • Thermo.....that's hugely funny, thanks for posting your "public information", always important when considering your clients' cats requirements in the times when 'Great Storms' hit the UK.......

As for profit making, all very good but personally I dislike destroyed gardens ;-)

    Cheers, Eugene
  • glad someone's got a sense of humour! Yes we've had quite a few calls, but not as bad as I thought it would be down here. Strange how all the damaged fences are lap panel and not closeboard. When will people ever learn!
