Setting up payroll and work pension requirements

My son may soon be joining me as my first employee, having always been a soletrader, this is all new to me.

Is the HMRC basic payroll software any good? bearing in mind it is just the one employee, i have no plans to gain more!

The auto enrolment work pension thing, my son may well set up his own private pension, as i did many many years ago, so do i still have to register with a provider just to legally be able to opt him out?

Thanks,

Anthony

My accountant provides a payroll service, I find it more convenient to use that rather than having the Admin work for a small payroll.

Ditto that our accountant did all the pay/pension stuff for us....

    ditto again

  • I find the HMRC Basic Payroll easy to use if you don't want to fork out on an account just to pay your son.

Employ a good chartered accountant the rules are mind blowing if you do the slightest thing wrong the HMRC are very tough

    it's well worth the expense

  • Have always done our own books and payroll and once the pension is set up (we use NEST), it's very easy.  Still, each to his own - if you are worried by it then pay someone to do it for you.

  • Thanks everyone, I'm happy to deal with it myself, just wanted an overview of what other people were doing.

Looking more in depth at the usage guide for the HMRC basic payroll, and it looks easy enough for just one employee, it practically does it for you.

On the pension front, legally it looks like i will have to set it up with the pension regulator, just to tell them he's opting out! No need yet though, as he's age 19 and there is no requirement to offer the auto enrolment pension until age 22, unless they ask to be enrolled that is.
