Selling Vans

Has anyone had experience of selling their van to one of the various vehicle buying websites ?

If so did you get a fair deal compared to selling it privately and which company did you use ?

I have replaced the van already so no need to part exchange it .

The vehicle buying websites seem like less hassle than selling it privately eliminating the tyre kickers hence my question  .

Thanks .

  • You'll always get more selling privately as the buying site needs to to make a decent profit.  Friend of mine sold her car to "we buy any car".    Advised her to sell privately but she took £500 when they were being sold on Ebay for £1200.  Originally they offered her more and then when they saw it, they knocked off loads over what were really minor items like a slight scuff on the bumper.

Yes the company I contacted want every blemish recording , photos of everywhere on certain angles .

Whilst it's in good condition end of day it's a workhorse and not a Porsche , it's just too small for my needs .

  • These days we put all old vans to auction, have always got back more than book price, as for buying sites got offered only a few hundred van sold for 5 times the offer,

Are they online auction sites you use Steve ?

  • Ebay classified ad costs £19.99 with no other fees to pay, I put a car on there recently (i assume a van costs the same to list), sold to a genuine local cash buyer within 24 hours, you get a few offers straightaway from traders, or dreamers from the other end of the country, but easy to weed them out so that no tyres are kicked by time wasters

It crossed my mind Billy eBay or autotrader I am just a bit worried hanging around waiting  for time wasters .to call .

One vehicle buying site has made a realistic offer although subject to inspection .

      • yes maybe I was lucky, first person to actually come look was a genuine buyer, car was 14 years old convertible, dents, scratches to every panel, faults that I disclosed in the listing, nice easy sale and got top money considering its condition. I would imagine that a working van is in great demand and cosmetic issues are not an issue to a lot of buyers, depends what kind of price bracket its in I suppose

Yes I was never precious about the appearance of my early vans it was more about reliability .

I bought this from new so looked after it and under 31000 on the clock it drives well and FSH but needs the odometer light and Bluetooth resetting , diagnostic garages say it needs to be taken to the dealer as they have the right app or whatever they use , estimated cost £500 but it doesn't affect the vans performance its not a warning light .

I pointed this out to the vehicle buying company they have not deducted anything from the price but knocked £50 off for a tyre  I pointed out needs replacing .

          • yes as Graham says the main knocking price down occurs when the company comes to visit, don't know what van it is but certainly sounds worth quite a few grand, they will offer maybe 60% of it's value if lucky.  When selling privately you have a big advantage over a lot of the trade ads as I assume you are not VAT registered John so can put the very attractive "NO VAT" in the listing title. I would list those faults and any others in a detailed manner, but not mention the predicted cost of repairs, that is for the buyer to look into. Look on websites to see what that year, model and mileage go for currently, and set asking price accordingly. When I did my Ebay classified I deliberately left out my telephone number, the potential buyers had to message me, that way no chatting to timewasters with daft offers. You are in a good position as already have your new vehicle, not desperate to sell to first low baller like many sellers are, just to get it off the forecourt and get the money for a new one

Thanks Billy for your insight .

Interesting I took my van to a local dealer who has a good reputation locally .

They went through my options and advised getting the odometer sorted at the main dealer and then selling privately which will bring maximum value .

Also that the van is an asset in my business if I decided to employ someone which is an interesting point .

My new vehicle is a station wagon which is exempt from ulez charges and very spacious compared to my little Citroen Nemo enterprise .

I will hang on to it for now but it's proved a pain trying to book it in to the main dealer no one seems to bother answering the phone in the service department .🤔🙃
