  • Not yet, I believe they were starting to contact people this week with the hope that payments can start being made by the 25th of this month so hopefully should hear something soon.

I did the online webinar yesterday morning which was basically 2 people talking through the stuff that is available to read online, then talking through examples and taking questions. They listed the dates etc which I understand has now been bought forward.

There is also the online eligibility checker (you need your UTR Governemnt gateway number & NI) where you can check to see if there is an indication whether and when HMRC will be in contact with you. They show a date and time from when you can apply, they made clear it is not first come first served but deal with this in tranches as to not be inundated with a mad scramble on Day 1 when everyone goes online to claim. They should be in contact again providing they have contact number, email or address or whatever method they normally communicate to us through.

some people question, why continue to work and claim but with the self employed we are the only group able to do so I think and they say “This grant aims to support lost income and to allow individuals in self-employment to continue their trades once this crisis has passed.”

What they did make clear was that to be aware of other scams and such claiming to be from hmrc ad that any payments they make should be received 6 days after your claim date.

Thank you for replies, it's much appreciated.

  • I got a text from HMRC about it this week,  but although I took 2 weeks off isolating because my wife had C19 . I'm still working , so not going to claim it . I know some people who are . But I dont think it's right to claim it if you've been able to work ..my work us maintenance and I've even taken new work on ...

  • I have just logged into my government gateway account and had a look.

It says that I personally can make a claim on the 13th May, but it also says this -

'Only make a claim if your business has been adversely affected by coronavirus.'

Given that most of us are working, does that mean we should not claim?

    How should we define adversley?

My turnover is down, but I am still doing quite well, so should those of us who are in this situation just not claim for the small drop in income, or should we still claim for this?

It looks to be a more complicated situation than I thought.

    • Yeah I had seen the 'adversely affected'. How is that gonna be defined? My wife and I work together, and at a guess we are about a third down, almost purely because we are taking it in turns home schooling the kids. So I guess that is adversely affected much as we are enjoying the time with the kids. But we are OK, business is healthy and we have rainy day money. So for us it really depends on how long the schools are closed for.

        You just self certify ....

        • Ah I see, thanks Gary. To be honest I haven't really looked into it yet. It really does depend on how long the schools are closed for.

    • Perhaps you could look at the other way.  Maybe you haven't been affected yet? but you could be.  Also if you had the extra cash you could perhaps use it to invest within your business which would help suppliers get their operations running again.  I haven't stopped working but I think we have every right to the money.

      • yes for me the economic impact is yet to manifest itself. The harsh times seem yet to come somehow but i don't doubt that they will. To me, this is the government chucking me some money, and saying, right kiddo get your affairs in order because you're on your own now
