Not sure how you can "miss out"!! Felco's last for years, you can get any spare parts you need, they work well..... why change? You used to be able to get them "serviced" for about £20 and they'd change any worn parts for you.
Thankyou Graham, I already know all about Felcos and have no problem with them, I didn't actually say I was going to change.
My questions, as you can see, were aimed at people who use Japanese Secateurs and I was asking purely out of interest and friendly discussion.

I had darlac for years , great secateurs but lost them in some long grass last month .
My mate got a new pair of Okatsune which are really nice to use although many rate the Niwaki I was considering one or the other but she gave me her old felco's which i have restored , between the darlac , the Okatsune and Felco's I prefer the Felco's I find i can cut quite rapidly with them .
But just my preference , The japanese ones are equally good .

I often have 2 sets of secateurs, one for rough, 1 for fine when going through mixed/herbaceous borders. And again up ladders, left and right side. Not gone as far as getting lefties for the ladder work yet!
I use Japan brand ARS secateurs, of which Wilkinson Sword seem to have a copy of locking action. I found the the locking mechanism of many, many secateurs, was driving me mad.
On my 2nd pr of ARS, smooth action, excellent blade, easy to keep razor sharp & the squeeze release :-) Just works. Got mine via Amazon
Also use the ARS KR 1000 shears, which are almost too light
Got both in October 2016, still going strong strong & sharp
You're right Geoffrey, locking when I don't want them to can be a pain sometimes. Especially when wearing gloves. It would be great to have a go with all of the secateurs mentioned on this thread.
I used to use Felcos but much prefer my Okatsune.
I am another convert from Felco to Okatsune ( several years ago ). I find them a pleasure to use, they keep an edge longer than Felcos, they feel more robust and have only needed replacing when I have pushed them beyond their limits too often. They stand more abuse than Felcos though.
I haven't tried ARS secateurs but have had a pair of their loppers for many years and found them to be excellent, and expect them to see me into retirement. Perhaps I should give the secateurs a go too.
I have felco 2, 5 & 7 i think the pair with the rotating handle make a difference, I do get them serviced every now and then.
What I have discovered is that some recently purchased niwaki snips are amazing for tight snipping and deadheading etc they are nice to hold and make a nice sound when snipping. Maybe a full secateur replacment will not be a felco again.....
Along with the niwaki snips I got the cleaning stone and it makes a difference in keeping them clean!
