Sealing a Pond

A very good customer of mine has asked for my help with their pond, which is currently leaking. To try and give you an idea of the pond. It has a diameter of 3.6 metres and is raised above the ground. It is made using some form of sandstone blocks which have been cemented on and some form of redering internally to seal it. The pond is at the bottom of a sweeping driveway and effectively creates a turning point at the end of the driveway. In the centre of the pond, is a Fountain. The water is currently leaking through the mortered joints. My initial thought was to put a pond liner in. However, when we were discussing today, I don't think this will work as it would need to be cut to accomodate the fountain and water would then leak through. One thought we had and I'm not sure if this is possible or not is to paint some form of membrane on the inside of the stone. This would effectively seal the joints.

If anyone could adivse on this, I would be really grateful.

Thanks

  • Hi James, just a quick disclaimer, I don't know anything about pond construction and wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. But many years ago I worked for English Landscapes/The Landscape Group. We did the regeneration of Stoke Poges Memorial Gardens and put down some sort of liquid rubber sealant in all the rills there. Might be worth looking into?

    • Cheers, Glen. That is what I was thinking. I wonder if anyone could put me on the right track for a suitable sealant.

  • another thing to look at is tanking grout the stuf they use to waterproof cellars or you can get stuf for sealing leaky manholes bit like a cement slurry that you brush on

  • forgot to say you will have to make good any defects first

    • Thanks, David. To be honest, at present we want the simplest fix. If we can get away with brushing a sealant on. Great. Iif that doesn't work, the customer will get someone in to refurbish it.

  • Not come across a rubber-type pond sealant.  I've used G4 to good effect on rendered ponds, but it does need a sound, clean, dry surface to apply to, and it's not cheap.
