Yes for some reason, people think that nothing needs doing, just because the kids are off school, weeds, grass, hedges etc stop growing then come September they complain that their garden is in a mess and want it tided up straight away!
Or is it that they can't cope with more than two things going on at the same time?

Well having 4 children I know its not that nothing needs doing, its that you have to keep them entertained and everything else goes out the window.
And to be honest, it is a nightmare having children running up to every 5 seconds asking what you doing?
Well when my kids were small I'd give them a trowel and get them to dig away in a part of the garden that they wouldn't do very much damage in, plant a few seeds/plants, water and watch them grow, entertainment and education all in one hit.
That would keep them busy for hours if not days, and not cost a penny. You can keep an eye on them while your gardening.
My first memory of gardening was with my Grandmother we bought a Lupin and I was the one who had to look after it, or collecting bugs and identifying them I was never bored and could keep myself busy for hours in the garden.
4 Children must be a handful, but I bet they'd love digging etc... much better than staying inside, make it into a competition, see who can grow the largest plant, catch the most bugs or do a bug hunt with a list of creatures that they need to find to win a reward.
My Granddad used to give me, a sixpence to get as many large white Caterpillar's as I could find off his cabbages. It's imagination children need not entertaining.
We have noticed a massive drop off over the years during the summer holidays - mind you town is great to get round!!!!
My mum used to get us to dig and find out where the water table level was hours of fun, especially digging through the clay band, which distracted us from the hole digging while we made pots, joys of country living!!!
not many of you left to the pound..you could get lynched for saying that nowdays
