Hi peter
if £500 is your budget you'd be better of buying a second hand eliet or camon, That stiga is very domestic..I brought both new 10 yrs ago the 401 eliet with Honda engine is great light and plenty blade choices and spares.....the camon was heavy and the wheels far to wide leaving quite a wide brim around the edge of the lawn... sold it 2 wks later, the new version is completely different tho now but you should easily get a 401/501 or a camon for your budget.. p.s the eliets mostly come with fixed blades as standard 3mm however yrs ago I swapped for double cut blades 1.5mm much better finish over all, only use the 3mm reel for renovations.
Thanks Mark, appreciated! Yes had considered used machines but having looked at a few which by their nature and cost have been used commercially and worked to death, hence looking at the Stiga which I appreciate is really a domestic machine but has a 12 month commercial warranty. Taking the view if it does 3 years before throwing it away at a purchase cost of around £415 ex vat ( we're vat registered) it will have cost us £139 a year plus any consumables it's a very cheap machine.
We have a John Deere machine, might be above your budget but not by much and still ok after 7-8 years and we do a bit of scarification.
We bought the Stihl one a couple of years ago that our local dealer uses as a hire machine - been rock solid and starts first time.

Weibang intrepid is a great machine although about £800 now I think. Had mine for 4-5 years and hasn't missed a beat.
