Scale insects....

I have two beautiful olive trees in my front porch, but their beauty is being destroyed by the sight of scale insects on the leaves and bark, seems to be an ongoing battle in trying to get rid of the little buggers, does anybody have any suggestions?

  • I am assuming these are inside year round?. I would take them outside for a breather for at least a couple of months, (if this is possible) and while they out enjoying the British summer, select a day to treat them in the using a hose pipe flooding the leaves and then spray using baby shampoo and water. Or if you like your chemicals use any one of the rose products, but I would strongly urge you to dilute it a little also.

I would seriously recommend giving the guys a real hard prune in february 2010 as well.

    good luck
  • Apply a copper sulphate solution (best by using a mist application) this will not only prevent fungus development but will also reduce the infestation of the Scale insect.

Scale insects attach themselves to the branches of the tree and feed off the sap and secreting a black / sticky dew over the leaves.

Make sure the soil is not too dry and consider feeding it - They love nitrogen.
