Roller mower on a budget.

Hi I wonder if you wonderful guys can help me decide on a roller mower. Unfortunately I only have a budget of £750 and would prefer new, as I have been stung before, buying used.

My work is mainly part time, doing around 10 small to medium gardens a week. My current customers have "stripe envy"  -  my dealer has suggested Masport, Honda hrx and cobra. Do you think these would give me a couple of part time seasons? ( do about two days a week mowing)  what i really want is a mower that produces a really nice cut and reliable of course.

I am currently using a domestic webb 18inch 4 wheeler that is leaving wheel tracks (why is that?) don't seem to see that on my neighbors lawns. anyway any advice would be much needed and appreciated.

What size cut? If your looking at 19" cut then the Honda or Cobra are both good mowers, Honda now do a 1 year commercial warranty on their HRX roller mowers, the cobra is a good mower but this will be its first full year on a Subaru engine instead of the Kawasaki engine, so unsure about its reliability. Personally I'd go for the Honda, also the 19" Cobra sits at around £850 and the dealers don't have a lot of leeway on price discounts.

The tracks are either mower too heavy or ground too soft!
I'd get something with a jap engine (Honda Kawasaki or suburu/robin) all good engines as long as not homeowner grade and will likely out last the rest of the mower.
£750 will get you something decent but if you are not mechanically minded go for what the local dealer pushes as they will be able to fix easily and quickly for you.

Thanks it will get there slowly and to be fair I'm in no rush as I've plenty of work. But always looking to get better contracts ideally ones that I can just supervise and not do the actual work on now!
I'm happy doing my stuff which I will keep doing but any more I can get and will make a bit extra is all good.
  • I have the viking mb 650 vr, which I can't fault so far. I think you could get one for your budget. I wish my other mowers would collect half as good to be honest.

For sure no pedestrian roller mower will beat a Viking for collection...
  • Thanks for your replies. Richard, the mower I'm using currently is extremely lightweight, so yes maybe the ground is still too soft.
I used to use a hayter 48 when I was doing this years back and was very happy but I borrowed a friends new harrier last week and something seems to have changed. It just felt like dragging a poorly hippo around!
I may decide on the Honda hrx 19", I was informed that this is a domestic mower but as Harry has mentioned, Honda must have faith in it to offer a commercial warranty.
Have not heard much about the viking. Think I will check it out though, even though I'm a roundhead!
