Review of the BALI landscaping show

Have you attended the BALI landscaping show at Stonleigh Park?

If you did, please share your thoughts on how it went; who was there; visitor numbers; areas of the landscaping and horticulture trades represented etc.

The show takes place 21-22 June 2011 at Stoneleigh Park, Coventry.

"Lynn Hunter, marketing manager at BALI Affiliate members James Coles & Sons Nurseries Ltd, commented: "We are delighted to support the launch of a BALI trade exhibition for 2011. This outdoor exhibition at Stoneleigh Park will clearly become the flagship event for all professional landscapers within the landscape industry. "

  • Well, I thought about going and feel a bit guilty for not attending, but: I'm going to RHS Hampton Court, which was fantastic last year, I'm going to Saltex in September, and I'm going to Creating Landscapes in October.  I can't go to everything and BALI is the furthest away.

I would prefer it if there was one or two big shows that covered everything, a day off is lost money but you have to balance that with finding out about new stuff and getting ideas.

Would like to know what anyone who did attend thought about the BALI show.

    Hi John

    Thanks for your feedback.

With the diversity of exhibitors already signed up to Creating Landscapes I think we're already achieving a very good mix of different companies so hopefully landscapers and gardeners will feel it will be right for them to attend.

I cannot comment on the BALI because I didn't go but Stephen Ingram attended on Landscape Juice's behalf and he'll post his review in the next day or so.

Did nobody attend the BALI show?
  • I exhibited at the show and we were very busy. Lots of Landscape Architects visiting. My seminars on Vectorworks went down well too.

Looking forward to exhibiting and speaking at your event in October.

  • Myself and my colleague went, it wasn't that it was bad, everything was very well done, but as a landscape practioner I wanted to see loads more products, more of the 'everyday stuff' such as fencing, decking, stone work, natural paving. I guess my expectations were wrong, a few years ago I went to the building trade show at the NEC in Birmingham, as you can imagine it was massive, I'm not even a builder and I enjoyed it more. There were loads of interactive things such as demonstartions at the stands, competitions and in my opinion they showcased more innotive products than I saw at the BALI show. One major thing that was missing for me was tools! I love trying and buying new tools that will help me do my job quicker and to a higher standard. In conclusion I think the BALI show was perhaps more aimed at landscape designers than us boys and girls on the tools.

I look forward to attending the Creating Landscapes show, I have much higher hopes for it!

  • Hello Mike
Thank you for your comments, they are extremely valuable and have been taken on board.

Over the two days the BALI Show attracted close to a thousand visitors. The list of exhibitors was varied and gave visitors access to a wide range of products/services available in the landscaping industry.

Being the inaugural show, one of our targets is to ‘build on the success of this year’s show’ and we aim to do this by listening to all opinions and addressing them.

BALI’s aim for 2012 will be to attract more exhibitors widening the products available to include more ‘everyday’ products. A more interactive show will be a part of next year’s agenda as BALI looks to build on the success by bringing the landscaping sector closer to the visitor, thus the addition of more demonstrations further strengthens this interaction between the visitor and show itself.

BALI always whole heartily welcomes comments whether they are positive or negative. Please feel free to let us know - contact@bali.org.uk

    Kind regards
    Daniel

With the greatest respect, should this have been the focus for year one?

When do we know if a show has had its day?

"Certainly shows come and go. We do extensive research on our exhibitors and visitors, and although you can sometimes cure negativity, it’s a good indicator of a show’s health. You also find selling something becomes harder and more time consuming, and starts making less financial sense. That was certainly the case with our lingerie shows, on which we lost money in our last two editions. Things have also popped up and we’d try it. In 2008 for instance, we started talking to the British Association of Landscape Industries, which was keen to have a show for members.

"I refused to launch the show when there was a recession going on, but we decided to give it a go in 2011. It didn't wash its face but was quite well received, so we tried again in 2012 and doubled the size of the show, but the visitor attendance was lamentable. Fortunately it brought us to the attention of the Institute of Groundsmanship, which wanted to change the management of its Saltex show. In turn that has attracted the attention of another body, which is considering us because we can handle an event of that scale."
