Sorry to hear you're bad news. Unless you have a spare three hours, I personally wouldn't bother the police. It is certainly worth keeping an ear to the ground locally though, boot sales, gum tree ,eBay etc. These characters tend to be serial offenders so look for multiple sellers. Best wishes, its a cruel crime.
as an ex copper i would recommend reporting it. it has nothing to do with your insurance and you dont need to disclose it unless you are claiming it. if the police know they can build a picture to try and get a pattern of how and where the thefts occur and it may lead to someone being caught or at least making others in the area aware of whats happening
If it's found and its tagged or DNA'd you may then get it back.
If bought from an official Stihl dealership they should have a record of the serial number if you did not record it.
OK - thanks guys. Soundslike its worth doing. I'll contact the supplier to get the serial number and then report it
5 or 6 years ago, I tried to buy TS400 on there are asked upfront for the serial number. The item & Seller disappeared with an hour of that request.
Fair assumption it was a stolen item ?
Bit different to hooky second hand gear but I have bought kit brand new off ebay before which has arrived with serial number sticker removed. Something to do with the seller not wanting to get in trouble with the manufacturer for selling cheaply mail order? and unable to register it for warranty of course
Even if you'd got the serial number, I wonder if that would help really. The police probably keep records of all the stolen gear with serial numbers where supplied, though I'd be very surprised if they were able to type in say Stihl BG86 sn:xxxxxxxx ro check an item out? Nice if they could. The other unfortunate thing is that I reckon most people don't keep any record of their own serial numbers.......... I certainly don't so perhaps I'd better mend my ways:)
All Stihl official dealers record serial numbers against purchase, so suspect a quick call by the Police into Stihl HQ in Camberley would indicate the Dealer hence the purchaser.
In Surrey, ALL equipment recovered is checked for DataTag, SelectDNA & SmartWater as a matter of course.
I would assume MPS would do the same?
