Render on horizontal top of raised beds

Hi all - after a bit of advice if possible.

I have a customer who wanted raised beds around the patio,  rendered blockwork painted white. No problems there except he didn't want any kind of capping stone on the walls - just for the render to go over the top of the wall - and completely flat. We did put a small slope in an attempt to avoid standing water but barely noticeable. Although done just over a month ago, the paint - just on the tops - has started to flake off pretty badly. Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I should remedy this? Any particular brands of paint or other treatments work well?

The render was left approx 3 weeks before painting and was dry when painted. Standard mortar mix was used with nothing special added and the 3 coats of Sandtex masonary paint applied as per manufacturer's guidelines.

Look forward to your comments -

Cheers - Steve.

  • Allow the render to completely dry before painting. Approx 4 weeks after render completion. But with this amount of wet weather and damp in the air alot  longer.

If the raised planter has soil against the blockwork then trouble will continue to occur, not only will the paint blow, so will the render itself, all planters, retainers must have either bitumen membrane with black jack or visqueen 1200 gauge or heavier.

The weather is certainly not going to help going forward thats for sure. I did line the inside of the beds, the sides are sound (so far!!) , just the flat top where I've got a problem.
