Removing ivy from an established privet hedge

I've been asked for advice on how to get rid of ivy growing through an established privet hedge. The hedge is approx 100m long. It's too far away for me to go and have a look in the current situation, and not the sort of work I usually do, but I can't think of any way of getting rid of the ivy other than pulling out and cutting by hand. The owner did suggest digging it all out and starting again but that's a big job. Any suggestions??

  • Not ideal but I just push my hands round the base of the hedge so that I can feel where the stems are coming from.......then just give them a good pull and the ivy will pull out from the hedge down to ground level..... use the same system for brambles, eldefberry.  I guess you could then put some Garlon onto the cut stems if you can get to them but that often isn't practical. .  Ivy isn't that fast growing so this usually keeps things looking fine for a few years.
