I was told the slabs were sealed before laying, so I don't think it can have been. All I have to go on is the client's email.
Keith, are you sure it's actually staining and not black lichen (which looks nothing like your regular old tree lichen)? Indian sandstone is very prone to being disfigured by this especially when leaves are left standing on it for a while
