Remote Controlled Flail Hire

Can anyone advise me please.

Ive been asked to quote on clearing a very large banking around a factory which is covered in long grass brambles and ivy. It needs to be cut back to allow pest control to sort a vermin problem.

Its to steep to work on using strimmers etc . not very good footing.

The only thing ive been able to find is a tracked rc flail which seems ideal.

Does anyone have any experience of hiring one of these machines? costs and where to hire etc.

Do you need any special certificate to use one of these?

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • I would imagine an RC flail is going to be hard to come by - very niche market, little demand so maybe only a few specialists would hold it.

Is their any access above or to the side of the ditch? If so perhaps this is your answer + I love using them....

They attach to the back of mini 18hp tractors and have a good reach - can work from the saftey of the level at the bottom of a bank and reach up and cut down

    Hi David

I would have liked to use a side arm flail as I know where I could hire one.

Problem is line of big trees at the top of the bank and a narrow fire path at the bottom adjacent to the building.

I saw the rc flail and was hoping to find one for hire but its proving difficult.
  • Hmmm Round our neck of the woods I cant imagine their being a big enough demand for them - perhaps looking at hire companies out Past york towards the NYmoors etc - areas with alot of hilly ground and Forestry activity would need them for clearing Gorse and/or rough hill terrain - West yorkshires abit tame on the whole.

How wide is the fire access path? Ive seen a very small flail on the back of a quad recently - cutting hedges down pathways in Kirkstall.

The fire paths about 4ft wide.then a very steep bank about 12ft high so would need to be a side arm with a good reach.

I don't think a small machine would reach that high though.

Was it a quad with a side arm David?

I think if I do find a rc for hire it will be outside of yorkshire I suspect.

Martyn, there is a member on LJN who has/intends to bring a US made RC controlled banks mower to market for sale to contractors and to hire companies.

There was a post at some point this year about it ..will go look....

I think this aspect is still in its infancy in the UK, but is becoming a serious requirement due to HSE focus on commercial contractors

Maybe something like this would do the job

  • It was a quad with a rear mounted side arm flail yes - but at best id say 6-8ft reach, being used to do hedges on paved pathways on estates - obviously cheaper than having 3 lads spend 2 hours triming the hedges like last year...

    Thanks for the info guys

the quad flail sounds a good idea.

I will try find the previous post which mentions rc bank mowers.

That's partly why we cant work on the Bank Gary as they have an on site H & S Officer who says its a no no. Not that we would anyway as you can barely stand on it let alone work.

I will take a look at that site Brian. Thanks for that.
  • how about a ferris dual drive with flail head, work great on the banks, and will cut through almost anything!! Golf & Turf @ wakefield do them!!
