I have 'sold' a round once. What I was selling in effect was my recommendation and the good will i'd built up over the years. I knew the person who was taking over so I felt more than comfortable telling my customers that they would be looked after. I did also explain though that they were absolutely under no obligation to use the new gardeners. In the end about 55 of the 60 did and were happy. The new guy came with me for the last 2 weeks unpaid to meet as many as possible and see all the gardens. How you would price it is entirely optional. I asked for what it would earn me in 3 months.
I also have a friend who bought a round from a stranger. The process actually ended up being almost identical. The existing gardener took my friend around for a couple of weeks and recommended him and then my friend just carried on the work. A few stopped him at the start but only a small number and that was about 4 years ago and it has been grand ever since. I think he paid 5 months turnover for it, and that didn't include tools etc.
