re turfing quote

hi

i have been asked to quote for re turfing and improve drainage on a lawn 10 x 10 metres, access is difficult through a garage and up some steps, i think i would need to incorporate 4 tons of sand before laying the turf.  i would also hire a turf cutter but have not used one before does anyone have an opinion on which is a good one to use?

how much would you quote to do this job and how much time would you allow?

i appreciate it can only be a ball park figure but just need some help to check i am not way out

Thanks

  • only 4 steps
  • Full days work with 3 people, labour=£250, 100m2 turf =£250, 4 tons sand=£64, turf cutter hire=£40, disposing of old turf=£40. Total=£644.
  • How are you going to incorporate the sand?
  • All these costs would be + 20% VAT and delivery costs

Turf from suppliers is very heavy at the moment it has not fully dried out from the snow and frost we have recently had.

You will also need a rotovator

To assist drainage try some of this. http://www.rigbytaylor.com/Shop+by+Product/Soil+Improver/Soil+Amend...

My last quote for 100 mt was just over £1k without VAT & got the job nearer 3 days with 2 men to compleate.

  • How are you going about improving drainage? Is that what your sand is for? I never do a turfing job without rotovating. Why not add some horticultural grit? Does it need land drains? Most hire shops my way hire Camon turf cutters. The old yellow ones are evil the new red ones are good. Not sure about Paul's suggestion of standing on the back, think the hire shop might be a bit annoyed if you put undue pressure on the motor (a bit like standing on a wacker plate - it normally ends in them dying on you). We normally water the lawn the night before that makes it peel off really well with the turf cutter. In my opinion 3 man days to lift the incumbent turf, rotovate, remove / bring in 4 tonnes of materials, heal it all in twice in different directions, rake it the top few millimeters loose and lay the turf is tight to say the least, i think six man days to do a good job is more realistic. Chris please let me know where you can get shrap sand at £16 a tonne. Sadly i don't think it will be anywhere near me in the south east.

what is the reason for sand , and what grade of sand?  or why not use a rootzone mix 50/50 mix

  • i was planning to rotovate sharp sand in once the old turf has been removed, there is currently a moss problem which i think is due to poor drainage hence the sand, the client is not interested in spending the money on land drains.  i had planned 2 people for 3 days, i think we can get it done in 2 but better allow for unforseen problems.
  • Hi Alex,

I also would have asked about a land drain. I have recently undertaken 2 similar jobs where I have installed land drains as in my opinion sand would not have resolved the customer's drainage problems.

You mentioned price as being the key consideration for not installing a land drain. In both of the above instances a land drain was comparible in price and certainly far more effective.

Of course, you're the only one who has seen the job and therefore the only one able to make that professional judgement.

Hope it goes well whatever you decide.

    Best wishes.

  • Your turf costs are very high, in northern ireland its only £2.50 a square metre, also sharp sand is only £16 a ton.

You will need a skip. If your putting 4t of sand in, your going to have to take that much out. I would say...

    100mtr turf  £350.00

    Cutter hire  £50.00

    Skip £125.00

    4T sand £100.00

    Labour £750.00

    contigency at 10%

    approx £1400.00

  • £16 a ton, can you start exporting it to the Kent / Surrey Border please. I can get soft at £12 a ton from a local quarry but the cheapest i can get sharp is at about £22 if I buy a 20 tonne load.
