Railway sleepers - help

All,

I've been asked to price a job, which contains something i havn't done before so a little advice would be helpful

The client would like railway sleepers around the the perimeter, two high, not sure if they are to go on there base, or side, but if to go on the side, im concerned even if backfilled with earth and staked on top of each other, how to stop them from falling inwards toward the lawn, any advice? or do you always place them on there side, i know they have to be built i.e. overlapped like a wall, and not butted up to each other.

I suppose if placed on top of each other on there side, it would take an awfull lot of earth to be back filled.

Thanks

Andrew

  • Screw them to timber posts using 'timber-lock' screws, if it's not very high 4"x4" posts would probably be ok, concrete these 1-2ft into the ground and install every 1.2m along the run.

  • Many Thanks, the amount of top soil to back fill will be immense, with 69 metres in total lenth of railway sleepers, two high !

  • Offer the job to a local landscape gardener.

  • Think I may do that, with a dangling carrot that I do the tree surgery stage of the job.
