pruning phormiums

hi guys- i have just been discussing hard pruning phormiums with a few people (in a facebook group) someone has advised that hard pruning phormiums can be benificial (down to 3in). i've never heard of this- my practice has always been cutting any dead or damaged leaves off, but maybe they know from experience? I have recently split some phormiums from a huge old one in a neighbours garden- the leaves are top heavy and scruffy- can i hard prune them as suggested? is that normal practice or is it only done in extreme situations?many thanks

  • ok thanks alot- thats very helpful.
p.s. John- if i cut them down to about 14inches like you suggest, can i ask what happens to the cut leaves- do they regenerate or just start again from the bottom?
  • The fresh shoot will grow from the base and up through the pruned growth (they don't regenerate)

  • Not sure why it would be beneficial to hard-prune a phormium unless it's damaged. I'd also be careful which varieties you do this to - I'm sure tenax would be fine but not so sure about a lot of the hybrids.
Cutting back/removing dead & damaged growth would be best practise in my opinion.
  • thanks- its interesting- i originally didn't think pruning back was an option really- but at least i know now thats its worth a shot when its really necessary- i guess leaving some foliage on might give it a bit more chance against late frosts- thanks for all your comments!
