Newbury has one a bit like it, (Barry Forkin) but one of my favourites is in Colwyn Bay. I make a point of going in and buying something when i'm there, partly because it's a joy to visit, and partly to help keep it going. And they still wear those brown overcoats. And despite the apparent chaotic stock, no matter what you ask for, they know exactly where it is.

 

Hardware shops like this are, IMHO, national treasures and we should do all that we can to keep them and make a little stand against the ever growing homogenisation of the high street. Rant over.

 

Anyone else got a favourite traditional hardware store they want to plug?

    We've got one near us that's run by a miserable version of Arkwright off open all hours.

    They still advertise photocopying while you wait and stocks absolutely everything.

    His prices go up and down like the commodity market though. He was trying to flog normal shovels as snow shovels for £20 each during September.

    These shops are great though if you need to buy a single zip tie or six screws though.
