Privet hedges dieing

Hi 

Has anyone got the same problem we have in our area in Warwickshire, the privet hedges atleast 40years old or more are dieing, I appreciate the dry weather hasn't helped but this looks like the same as what's destroying the box hedging.

And any recommendations on replacement formal hedging on the front gardens of the housing estate would be welcome,not laurel or conifers,thanks in advance, I was thinking maybe Photinia.
