Poor Weather Contingency

Wondering if any of you who do landscape construction projects have a 'poor weather' contingency built into your terms and conditions.

I am finding that I am taking the whole cost for poor weather at the moment and if there was a way to pass that cost to the client, or recoup some costs, even the labour only cost of projects running over by weeks due to heavy rain. The men are still out working in it, they dont stop for rain, but it can add 2 or 3 or even more weeks to the project and wipe out profitability.

  • No, don't have a 'poor weather' clause in the terms, only contingency measure is a gazebo.

3+ weeks is a heck of an overrun due to rain, assuming work continues on the same project. Your projects must be big 'uns.

  • yeah they often are, current one is 10 weeks. The smallest are a few weeks. Most are 4-5 weeks.

  • As far as I am concerned it's all part of the game Susan, but I can fully understand your concern. You probably wouldn't offer a discount in the event of a fantastic run of weather, so I have always looked upon it as 'swings and roundabouts'. Not only that, your reputation would soon be shot to pieces I would think.

The only way I think you could possibly go cap in hand is if the client insisted you start the job in mid winter against your advice.

    It'll soon be spring!

  • We use gazebos to carry on as most of last year we were under them! Advise to buy the proper commercial ones from gala tent 4.5m x 3m pop ups can be £500 but workers standing around costs alot more

There are smartphone apps that can now show weather on radar and tell you when rain is due.

  • never finished a job late by more than a day or two down to bad weather. Waterproofs, gazebos and a warm bath after. I don't see how I could ever pass on any cost to a client. If its to wet to do one job, then there is usually anther job we can go to get something done.

  • hi susan we use poptents .ie 6mx3m x2 was even laying fan pattern two weeks ago in 29c plus they give me 32m2 under cover work in gales and two men can put them up and quick take down they have gutters so you can place side by side
