Plastic Trugs - Is there a better option?

I currently use plastic trugs whilst weeding to collect the debris and haul it off to wherever it needs to go. However, I find these typically last me 6 - 9 months before the handles break and I need to get a new one. Consequently I have a slow growing pile of broken trugs at home as I'm resistant to taking them to landfill. Does anybody use anything different or have a way of strengthening the handles so they don't break so easily? I'm slowly trying to reduce my reliance on plastic, if they lasted 2 or 3 years before they broke it wouldn't be so bad.

  • hi i use one of the landscaping type very heavy duty black plastic plant pots which have handles, that a tree might come in, they seem virtually indestructible compared to the flexible tubs, there are small drainage holes but in practice nothing falls out

Addis garden tidy is durable it has a swing handle and can also be used as a scoop on its side to sweep leaves into .

Its also square which i find fits better in the van , also good for tool storage and handy when filled with water to soak plants in as you can carry it around unlike a round trugg full of water which spills out when you grab the handles as it has solid sides .

  • Ikea bags. You get get them on amazon for pennies and you can stick them in the washing machine. They last for ages.

    • Ah - I think I have a couple of those already! Sometimes you need someone else to point out the obvious!

I use the 120ltr  green bags from ebay, they pack flat and hold a lot of waste the only downside I have found is trying to fill them on a windy day and they want to just blow away.

  • I use those trugs and like you say the handles break. I make holes and use brass eyelets/grommets which I thread rope through to make new handles. These are way better than the original and last ages. I can't say how long because none have died on me yet after at least 2 years. You can get a kit from toolstation for a tenner, or lidl sometimes do one. Easy enough to do, just a bit of effort and well worth it

    • Good tip that John..thanks for sharing!!

    • Thanks John - I will look into this.

  • If they last 6-9 months,I don't really see the problem.... they don't cost much so just be ruthless and chuck them when the handles go...... nothing lasts for ever.

It's probably better for the environment if they last longer.

We re-use old compost bags for hand weeding as they take up almost zero space in the vans.
