I would wrap a porous seep hose around the root ball as you plant with connector ready to be plugged in to a hose. It is very difficult to irrigate a rootball from the surface.
depends mostly on what mother nature throws at you weather wise i would say. where are you planting the trees ( county, city are you in ). But for next 4 months i would say the trees wouldnt need much give that most ground is saturated and a bad winter forecast, so very little drying out is going to happen for the winter. For ease of watering when needed i would insert irrigation pipes to each tree as you plant, your customer can then just water them through that and when not required can be easily removed.
ps: i would soak each root ball in a bucket of water for 30 mins before planting to make sure they are well soaked if you suspect that it has dried out any between being wrapped at the nursery and transporting to site of planting.
Thanks very much for the advice. The trees are now planted, customer happy with detailed instructions on how to look after them.
