Planting Hoe, Iron or whatever they are called !

I am trying to get one of the planting tools that are often used for small trees etc.  They look like a Mattock but without the axe part & are usually on an axe style handle so that they can be used one handed.

I once saw a set advertised complete with a case.  It included a couple of different handles & heads & I regret not buying it !.

Does anyone know what they are called & who sells them ?.

  • Azada - many blacksmiths will make you a really good bespoke one for not a huge amount of money or you can get them from Get Digging
  • I have seen those & they are not really what I am looking for. The ones that I saw were one handed so you could hold the plant in one hand & the planter in the other. Also the handles were shorter & shaped like an axe handle. The closest that I have seen are some on Japanese tool websites.
  • Have a look at this site

Its american but for information i believe this is what you are looking for, they do a Planting Mattock further down the page which is the same sort of tool i have seen being used on the TV recently when they were planting very small tree saplings

  • Chillington hoes?
  • How dumb can a fella be. I had forgotten about them & they are fairly close to me. I might be able to mount one of their heads onto a decent axe handle.
  • I've just ordered these, they look like they might come in handy, thanks.
