Plant Label App for Iphone

The other day while working in a clients garden they asked me to move an under performing Acanthus.  Now I have a fairly good plant knowledge, but I found that I was unsure of its ideal conditions, so I said I would look it up and move it on my next visit.  It got me thinking as to whether there is an app out there that allows you to search a plant and get just basic info, the kind you would find on a plant label, eg height and spread, ideal growing conditions that kinda thing.

Anyone use one?

  • Iv got "Plant Genie" on my Iphone, all you need to know is the plant name, and it will give you info on the plant.

Iv just used the app for "Acanthus hungaricus" and stats said this:- height 1.5m, spread 0.9m, full sun or partial shade. Deep, well drained soil, fast growing, flowering May to July, fully hardy. Also has Garden Care info on it. Dont know if the info is true because I dont know much about Acanthus :-).

You could just access the RHS plant website via your iPhone's built in Safari Browser : http://www.rhs.org.uk/Plants

There are also a couple of threads on LJN recommending iPhone apps, which include some plant/tree ident programs - will post links when I'm back at yard.

I always use the RHS site vis my iPhone instead of relying on individual apps. I also carry around the RHS A-Z around inthe vans with me which is also handy for showing clients if need be.

  • I am no technophobe, but have never found this a problem. In the old days they had things called books ...squashed vegetable matter with different coloured patterns on them which they called words or pictures, enclosed in a more rigid cardboardy sort of sheet.....like the boxes in which your phones/ipads/computers etc arrive.

A selection of these in your van would solve your problem, never run out of battery, lose signal, die if get wet and probably be quicker to use.
