Have you costed this out to take account of deliveries, breakdowns/failure, abuse and importantly any liability insurance you need? Have you a competent person to service/check it over after every hire ?. Remember any damage or injury resulting from you hiring a less than 100% machine out will come back on you.
If you have and can price accordingly and competitively then I would say there would be a market that often relies on word of mouth especially for specialist landscape equipment. Get it wrong and let down contractors then you will have problems.
We tend to have the base equipment we need in-house, but when special jobs present themselves we will look to see what equipment is needed, what its costs is and how that affect what we would charge client. We sometimes loose out when a another contractor has matching equipment in house and can cost accordingly.
I would say don't hire to the general public..the abuse your equipment will get is unbelievable..just my view....
I suggest you review your business plan to see what return on investment you need to make to ensure it remains a profitable sideline....

There is a lot to think about as Gary has pointed out.
I have been hiring equipment out for the past 6 years.
I would suggest joining the CPA or similar as you can then use there hire terms and conditions which are well proven with insurers when you need to fall back on them.
Make sure you check out all your clients fully as your insurers will not being paying out in the case of a loss or similar if you haven't followed there requirements to the letter.
Make sure that who ever hires from you has hired in plant insurance as part of there business insurance or that you can point them in the right direction to get short term cover.
The list is pretty well endless and i am still learning more everyday.
Also remember that if you are delivering you will need to be running on tachograph if you are over 3.5T

Just make sure that you have the time to deliver, collect, service, record inspection sheets for the equipment etc as it does eat into your day quite a bit. Even answering the phone to all your lovely new clients can eat away at a huge chunk of your time.

No problem with the delivery/collection of the machines as l would do the smaller stuff and my partner would do the larger machines as he owns a haulage company.
The servicing/inspection would be done by us.
We are just waiting to hear back from the cpa as you can't join them until they check you out
