LJN's Business Objectives Group (BOG) is for any Pro serious about building their business.

For the researching visitor there's a wealth of landscaping ideas, garden design ideas, lawn advice tips and advice about garden maintenance.

I just don't get it, not had any calls for a couple of weeks, other than a small greenhouse repair and a bit of landscaping which I'm hesitant to do. I have seen other companies out doing lawn cut and maintenance rounds, but I'm simply not getting any. I have done leaflets, ad in local circular, all the usual.Feeling a bit down with it :(

  • Hi there, don't worry i've had an advert in the local paper for the last 4 wks & received my 1st phone call today. The sun is out in Milton Keynes. Put yourself an advert on Ebay, i've had success with that already. Wishing you Good Luck.
  • Are you in Glasgow Dan?

Something I've found that has worked really well for me is to phone up big "office" based businesses such as Standard Life, Scottish Widows etc and ask to place an ad on their internal intranet. You'll probably have to offer some sort of discount, but it has brought me a load of business.

I've also fallen into the trap of concentrating on any work I've had and putting any marketing ideas on hold - not a great long-term solution though it becomes increasingly hard to balance time.
  • Had quite a few calls last two weeks but strangely this week, nada!
  • I launched my little website and advertised on a couple of local websites I got three enquiries got all three jobs than nothing till just yesterday and that is it as in phone ringing, I got another on recommendation.
    That was 4-5 weeks ago.
I would think that the sun is shining a bit more people will suddenly there garden needing sorting out.

Check all your local area websites mine is free to advertise in the business directory and you can write little articles linking your business if you want.

I want to improve my articles before I do that!

  • Dan,
Chill out. Building a business is an acumulative affair and as Rob has already said, it takes a year or two for the ball to really start rolling. As long as you are doing the right things with your marketing and using your time sensibly it will start to fall into place. My mentor once told me that it takes 5 years to really get a business into serious profit and my experience talking to many business owners (and with our own business) over the years has borne this out.
On marketing - while you have the time try to think outside the box a bit. We find that a multi-pronged approach is required - website, garden designers, flyers, print ads, local press releases, garden talks, etc etc. Take every opportunity to tell people about your business and you'll be amazed at the places work can appear from.
The one thing that all successful businesses have in common is persistance. They NEVER give up!

  • A lot of sound advice on here Dan, the main things are persistance and patience.
Keep on with the marketing and if you get work coming in, work even harder on your marketing, it is when you are too busy, that work is easiest to find, then you can select what it is you really want to do.
Chris Heiler is worth reading and I try to read his regular articles.
  • I think most of us encounter this at the start of the year, new clients are few and far bewteen and then you just get going it slows down again. In the South East we are about two / three weeks ahead of your area and we have had that sudden mad rush of requests just over a week ago - it will come you just need to be ready for it and use the quiet time to for marketing etc. Remember you only need that one phone call and it will come! Hopefully the May day Bank Holiday coming up will help remind people to get their gardens sorted.

Don't worry we all have times when the phone doesn't ring. I find it often goes quiet in the school holidays.
