Inadequate protection for workers can increase the risk of accident, injury or long term health issues - and for the employer possible HS prosecutions of £30k or more.....

Since the introduction of the current PPE directive over 20 years ago, there have been many advances in technology, and PPE is much changed. So, with some regulation becoming outdated or no longer applicable, it's time for it to be replaced.

Also in the last 20 years awareness of workplace safety has much improved and we now have a better understanding of the health implications and long-term conditions associated with the incorrect use of certain equipment and machinery. Yet still some employees are daily at risk of illness and long-term disorders due to the lack, or incorrect use, of PPE.

Hence, the new legislation coming into force in the first quarter of this year, with full enforcement being in place by the end of 2018.

Unlike the previous PPE directive, which placed emphasis on manufacturers, it is likely the new regulation will require anyone involved in the entire supply chain to ensure the PPE they are using meets the required standards.

Therefore forming a strong relationship with a supplier who understands your business, may be key to ensuring your company PPE is in line with the new regulations. The supplier will  be able to recommend appropriate uniform or equipment and advise you of any changes that occur regarding specific individuals and / or job roles.

Proper fit and providing the correct level of protection in line with the task being done, is essential.  To do this you need to assess the types of hazards each individual is exposed to, in what quantities and levels, and for what length of time.

Just as important is that the equipment is comfortable to wear and doesn't impede the work being done.  Incorrect, ill-fitting or incompatible equipment can be as damaging as not having any protection at all. And if it doesn't fit properly or gets in the way (e.g. an ill-fitting face mask because the wearer has grown a beard / goggles keep misting up) the PPE will be discarded at the first opportunity!

Once the appropriate PPE has been selected and you ensure that safety procedures are properly adhered to i.e. that PPE is worn correctly / in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, the next step is to ensure that equipment is properly maintained. Correct use and regular checks of PPE will help to get the full working life from each item so it can continue to provide effective protection for your staff. Good maintenance also saves the necessity, and cost, of buying new PPE thus avoiding the temptation to buy cheaper and possibly inferior quality products.

PPE can include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear and safety harnesses; also respiratory protective equipment (RPE).
