  • Morning Phil,

It's tricky to get to the bottom of this (TUC stuff) to find out whether Duncan Wheldon or anyone did in fact say this without spending a bit of time researching the facts. The press so often sensationalize & mis-quote these days I've almost lost faith in serious reporting especially where politics is concerned.

However, that aside I think the (alledged) statement could be true for some self employed people; that they did in fact become self employed because they couldn't find a job. And that in all cases should be celebrated, supported & encouraged by everyone including the TUC. The (alledged) statement that self employed people don't drive business is poppy cock...what planet are they on??

  • Why did I choose self employment. I keep asking myself this over and over. I used to work for a company as a head gardener I was on a little over £28,000 a year. So had no real intention of just up and leaving. The time came and we were outsourced by a very large company who deal with franchises. The boss owner took an instant dislike to I expect the money i was earning so tried bullying me out, when this failed he made me redundant. I thought to myself Im never going to work for an idiot like him again. Oh he was a baker and didnt have a clue about gardening. I recieved my small refundancy and purchased a few tools and a van. Best thing ive ever done

    Hi Helen

I do think gardening and landscaping became a target occupation some people who'd exhausted all other options.

I hope and think that our industry has spurred a real deal more people with the right aspirations.
