Pel Job 14.6 mini digger

Has anyone got experience with engines and hydraulic systems of mini diggers? I have a fairly old (year unknown) 14.6 Pel Job (Volvo) 360 degree excavator - I am having trouble starting it. I thought it might be the battery so I bought a new one this afternoon, popped it on but no luck. Basically, when I turn the key I get a whizzing noise. On inspection it appears that the starter motor might be hydraulic driven and I noticed that there appears to be a drain plug missing from the aluminium casing - should the casing be filled with oil to lubricate the engaging cog? I have a lot of experience at the controls but sadly, as we hired most equipment in, I never had to worry about maintenance. If the cogs are seized, can I spray freeing oil in or perhaps even top up with oil and turn the engine over? Any help much appreciated.

  • i wouldnt even try starting it yet -

if its a hole/plug I GUESS its missing a part ! im no expert but was chatting to the lads on here -on chat last week and ive had my Kubota k-800 on its side for 6 hrs stuck !!

so - it gave me a revision of how things can break / work

you could do more damage than good . mine was leaking oil (engine) and hydraulic , so its going to get a service next week/sunday??? if it likes it or not oil/air and fuel filters and engine oil.

id suggest asking your old local farmer mate to take one look at this ''hole'' asap phil

or search on here (google) be safe ! safety first - safety on the farm ! :-)

    Hi Robin

It appears that the hole was just for inspection/dust control.
I think I might have sussed it now and it wasn't a starter motor after all.

I have a foot pedal (as do most of the older diggers) that controls hydraulic tools such as breakers. If it isn't in the neutral position the engine stalls when on tick-over. I thought I had rocked it back and forth to free it during my previous attempts to start the digger.

I shifted it slightly this afternoon and up she fire - barely turning over:) I started it several times after so fingers crossed it will be OK.

    Thanks for your suggestions.
