Patio Advice

Could anyone offer some advise on the following please.1. What sort of paving would you recommend for a garden patio. I want something that is relatively cheep and fairly smooth for little children to ride trikes across etc.2. Could you let me know how much you think the following would cost. I'm looking for a rough idea as if it would be £5000 then I won't be doing it but if its £2000 then I might !Replace existing paving slabs with new approx 40M2Replace existing 9 panel fence with new including two side access gates - not sure what type of fence to get want something better than B & Q type stuff but want to keep costs down too.Make two raised beds with new sleepers each approx 3m x 1m x 600mm highAccess no problem but hard stoney ground. Thanks,

  • Thanks Karl

Nothing to hide but i never put any personel details on the internet.

Haven't got anyone in to quote yet as I dont want to waste there time if its going to be way above my budget.

Based on your figures it looks like i'll be doing a make do and mend.

    Thanks for your input.

    1. Do some research, there are loads of pavers out there that would suit, you'll have to choose. Unless of course you pay a garden designer to do this for you!

    2. For 40 sq m, assuming the sub base is a sound foundation to work from then you might get away with 2K

sand at 50mm 2 cubic metres (4 tonne bags) £140
    cement 24 x 25 kg bags £84
SBR adhesive to paint the underside of the pavers £20
slabs cheap sand stone (3 tonne) £18 per metre £800
NCC pointing High quality pointing resin based, brilliant stuff (4 -5 x 40Kg) £480
    consumables tools, buckest, spray line,
tool hire as required, whacker plate, mixer, cutter etc
labour 3 days for 2 blokes asuming £150 per day per man £900

add that lot up and £2424 plus vat = 2848.20

9 panels of fencing would be approx 1.905 x 9 = 17.145 linear metres, £756.09 plus vat and old fence removed, you could always try www.thefencedoctor.co.uk

sleeper beds would need approx 16 sleepers at about £22.00 and an impact driver with long bolts to fix them together. Soil to fill them 3 tonne bags.

I can be more specific if you require, i guess if you want cheap cheap cheap you'll be doing this yourself take ages and won't be happy with the poor results.

Use a professional landscape gardener, oh and let us see your profile - what have you got to hide?

    cheers

Is closeboard the same as feather edge

For the fence closeboard panels would be more atractive than lap panels. Aprox an extra £10 premium per panel over the cost per panel of standard L lap.

Why not get a few local firms to quote you for the work? trying to give Internet prices without seeing the actual site will always be a stab in the dark.
  • Close board is the same as featheredge.

One way to save some money would be to use 'council grey' 2x2 or 3x2 butted up. this would give you a smooth surface that you desire but over time seeds would settle in the joints so
you would have to do a bit of maintenance to keep it looking good.

As already stated your best bet would be to get in some one local to you to give you a price which would be more accurate than a guesstimate from what you have described.

    Jim,

You don't have put 'personal details' such as your phone number and address on view, but I think you will find people will respond more if they know who they are reponding to...Otherwise it's all a bit of cloak and dagger.

How about your location, what you do, what experience you have, what you are trying to achieve?

Remember, you're on the UK's leading open and transparent network for landscaping professionals and other interested parties....
  • Thanks Big Dig

Have thought about going that route but thats a last resort !

I know you guys probably don't use the likes of B & Q for paving but any views on thier cheapo stuff?

  • Not that great, You can get Better quality cheeper.

What part of Herts are you in? I may know some local supplyers to you, im near Dunstable.
  • If you have a look on buildcenter website you could see if they have a dedicated landscape centre near to you. These have a good range of paving on display and will give you a good idea of what they look like laid and whether you like them.
  • Thanks for the replies.

I'm in Watford - will give buildcentre a go.

Have someone coming round tomorrow to give me a ballpark figure - will then work out a design/spec if budget allows.
