Paper Diaries

Whilst I am quite a fan of technologies, I know that many people in our sector are more traditionalist in their approach.  What is everyone's opinion on how much paper diaries are still used?  Do you think this still an effective advertising medium, or has our sector moved almost entirely to electronic diaries?  Incidentally, does anyone use e-confrencing, or is that a step too far?

  • My A5 notebook and diary go absolutely everywhere with me!  I do use diary on iPhone too but not technologically 'up' on how to get most out of it (syncing with laptop etc...).  I think your probably right about our industry.  Friends that are in different lines of business solely use electronic diaries and sync them with there home+office+wife+secretary's diaries once they are in vacinity of computer.  They don't even need to link via USB - all done wirelessly with new iPhone software I believe.

Very impressive technology but my brain struggles enough with the basics!  One day...

  • love my paper diary (hav 2, cross referenced, for home/work); occasionally put calendar alerts on my phone if i know i'm going to be out & will need reminding; but I find checking back to 3 months ago is a lot easier with the real thing...

  • Its paper for me, tried to go digital with a Palm Pilot but I got in a real mess with it, found the screen to small to see how the week ahead was panning out and while flicking between weeks was easy enough to do, somehow it seems harder to take in the information you are looking at.  It was such a faff to jot down a quick note and I felt  that my more senior clients where thinking just get a piece of paper ! .  I do have a smartphone but if the phone rings and you need to make an appointment in the diary you need to look at the thing while talking, not easy even with it on speaker you risk cutting them off.  Just bought a lovely red Moleskine diary, week to view on left and a full page for notes on the right.  Love it  http://www.moleskine.co.uk/products/

  • Yes - though I print off outlook calendars by the month, I absolutely adore moleskine products - well constructed, classic and a bit mud/waterproof!

  • I hate technology totally!! I only use it because I have to - but if I lived in an ideal world, it would one without computers, ipods, mobile phones and x boxes!!

And what really gets in my clack is emails taking the place of writing letters! Who is ever going to keep their 'love emails and texts!!' Letters and handwriting is what sets us apart from other animals - so getting back to the diaries - long live them and all who write in them!!! thank goodness E Christmas cards didn't take off - can you imagine how dull life would be with no greetings cards!!!

  • i always have paper diary, i cant type on a phone and speak on the phone at the same time, i can write with a pen much quicker. also if somone phones me up and says can you do x hours in 3 weeks time i can look at a whole week on one page and say yes i'm available x x or x day.

  • I use google calender to keep track of all the regular jobs and just print off a sheet each month, so a quick glance and every things in plain sight. I pencil in small notes and ad hoc work to the sheet as i go but also have an A5 week to view diary for anything requiring more writing space.

  • Im a huge fan of technology but it's an A5 diary for me, I call it my bible as I've always got it to hand!
  • PRO

WH Smith Quatro Appointment Diary for Me. It never crashes and the battery is always charged up on it. (Subject to my pencil being sharp)

  • the sawmill on site gives me a great diary every year its ace
