Open graded stone block paving

we have carried out a few permeable paved driveways. We have used type 3 Mot sub base and then 6mm open graded stone as a screed bed.

My thought is could you use standard 10mm gravel as a screed bed? Probably not for a permeable purpose as it has fines in it. But I wonder if it would work for a standard driveway or path. I would think once it’s compacted and contained within a standard border it might act the same.

It got me thinking mainly because the cost between 6mm and 10mm gravel is quite substantial over a large area.

Is it a crazy idea?

  • Was your open graded stone angular, so it interlocked and compacted better? That's the main thing to be aware of.

    • Yes it was, that does make sense. I wonder how much difference it would make. I might have to experiment at home :)

  • Could be wr My but I don’t think ‘standard’ 10mm gravel would compact??

type1 does, because it’s all different sizes and they then bind together
