I would love to ask some feedback on this query.A customer asked for a quote for grass cutting amongst other lawn treatments. I gave him my cost for a fortnightly visit (£45) including edging. He has got back to me and confirmed the other aspects of work, but isn't sure about the grass cutting. He feels he may wish to do the job himself at times. The lawns are neat and tidy, short-kept and clear of debris. He has asked for a one-off price for a first cut next month. I have warned him that irregular cuts may vary in price. My question is would you charge a lot more for a one-off cut like this? It would be good to give him a pleasant feeling about my work so I'm tempted to stick to £45, but it's not as easy to schedule in a one-off cut and I do want to encourage him to agree to the full shebang.I think I'll suggest a £50 charge for the one-off cut, but what would you do?PS It's roughly 500m2... do you feel this is fair?

I would pitch it on how busy you are and where he is located. If you can fit him easily and you are not going to have to make an hours round trip to do the job then I would stick to the £45 (as you say it will give the client a good feeling).

If he is located miles away from your nearest customer and is going to cause you grief to fit him in I would apply a faff tax.
  • If you have the time and the customer understands that then why not..if and when he askes you to do it again..he must understand that he might have to wait till you can fit him in..I would stick with £45 if he is going to be a reg for other work..he might even decide that he'll make it a fortnightly after all.
  • If you feel that you wouldn't lose the other work from him, I would load up a 100% premium for one off cuts however if the lawn is fairly good and not knee high I might be tempted to increase by just 75%.

On a slightly different note, how many times have cleints agreed to regular cutting and after the first cut changed their mind!

As a general rule I now always charge a lot more for the first cut of any new client and then reduce it for regular cutting. This way I protect myself and the client can see the benefit for signing up for regular service.
  • i agree to what Jez @ Hedges and Lawns says the price should be same as fortnightly price , plus extra for digging egdes for first time. This way client will be happy to have you back, and if he dont you aint lost out for time spent sorting out edges.
