On board Tachos/Hour Meters

Who else uses after-market tachos/hour meters on their mowers or large equipment ?

If so, what do you use ?

In an earlier post I mentioned these and wanted some new ones. Ours originally come from the US and cost about £25 each.

These are the small LCD matchbox size box of tricks that you can tie-wrap/mount easily to 4 stroke/ 2 stroke machines. They have 2 wires (one to ground and one that wraps around the HT lead), easy to fit and are great help. You can see if you're running 100%, see the load when cutting long grass etc and importantly you can time your jobs relatively easily and finally know when it's service time. You can then press and reset them ready for the next service.

I have never added a tacho / hour meter to a machine, I always thought it was a bit hit and miss trying to work out how many hours a machine has done, between service's. It is definitely a good idea to fit a tachometer, fortunately now the larger commercial machines, do have a tacho fitted.

You must have got the last 4! :) I ordered mine this afternoon!
  • Gents do you have any photo's that you could put up?
  • Yes, photos would be handy. How easy are they to fit onto a mower?

The require minimal fitting - either two tie-wraps or two small self tapping screws to mount somewhere on back of engine cowling (ie for a walk behind) nb/ ensure you are not screwing into a petrol tank etc.

Two wires exit matchbox size box with LCD display:
    - black wire grounded to engine/earth by any metal bolt
    - red wire routed to HT lead and wrapped 4 times around HT lead (wire has 'bendy support wire' built in)

Any remaining slack wire can be neatly coiled and tie wrapped and hidden under cowling etc.

All the ones we've bought have a sheet of clear instructions

Will try to take piccie when next in yard

    Here's the instructions:
  • Cheers Paul and Gary, very helpful. Will have to buy one off e-bay, didn't know they were so simple to fit

    @Gary RK

Which hour meter would you recommend for a Honda GCV160 engine?

    Anyone else using them?
