Old tools

I am about to retire my dads' old spade the handle has cracked and the spade itself is cracked his old five tined fork however is still in good order and in use. both items are to the best of my knowledge at least seventy years old.I have some of my grandfathers tools which I use from time to time, not only do I find they work well but I think of their owner when I use them, a living memorial and link.Does anyone else have the same practical and sentimental relationship with some of their tools?

  • I don't have any tools like that myself, but I can understand the history you feel when using them. I have a friend who is a grocer. He has an old sack barrow with a wonky wheel. I asked why he still uses it when he has got a flash new one. He said it was his grandfathers and it reminds him of when he used to watch his grandfather unload the van.

It is also true that old tools do seem to have a timeless, solidarity about them.
