New Stihl batteries

While collecting some new Stihl battery kit today, I was told that new increased capacity versions of the AP 100, 200 & 300 batteries will be out very soon.

If batteries continues to evolve at the rate reckoned by some experts, then in 3-5 yrs our industry equipment will look totally different. Commercial mowers will be the test ....

  • Unfortunately, looks like the AP300 doesn't increase in capacity...just the 100 and 200 which isn't really much help. https://prolandscapermagazine.com/stihl-enhance-battery/

    STIHL enhances battery offering
STIHL has launched a new generation of PRO 36V batteries. These offer higher battery capacity and a new orange design for increased visibility.

If you use a good source of info, you’ll see that a new & increased capacity AP300 battery appears in early 2019.

Woukd also expect to see a larger battery as well next year as per other Makers.

      • I did on the Stihl website which stated that there would be no increase in capacity or weight....

Despite the increase in capacity of the new AP 100 and AP 200, both batteries remain the same weight as the current versions (AP 100 0.8kg and AP 200 1.2kg), ensuring professionals can use STIHL tools for longer whilst keeping the overall system weight to a minimum.

The AP 300 will remain at the same capacity and weight, but will feature the new design. Enhanced STIHL AP 300 batteries are expected in 2019.

Its slightly ambiguous though I assumed they were saying the "enhanced" batteries in 2019 will just have new new colouring.but no increase in capacity/weight.

Stihl Area Manager states increased capacity on revised AP300 in 2019.

The answer is in the Stihl headline - I can only report what I’ve been told  :)

  • On the flip side. ,with the constant' upgrading' in the past years , without wholly proving worthy adversaries to twostroke  It would put you off buying for just a while yet??

It would and does, but accept its so dependant on your market place,

We ‘test drove’ the complete range earlier this year thanks to Stihl and found that certain items did not provide the usage in a commercial scenario.

We’ll know Stihl are serious when the offer a van charging solution off the shelf for mobile based teams.

Until then, we’ll have to fall back to the ever faithful two stroke machines :)

It seems to me they are really missing a trick by not offering a van charger.  Mind you, I don't know if their competitors do either?

        • the only problem with inverters in constant use will shorten the van battery life

also if you are only going 2 miniuts down the road it will not charge it and therefor might need several battery packs and chargers which will bump up the price of the tools

Agree.... and that’s the ‘economics’ of using battery power at the moment.

Using a fast charger for 15mins gives you a sufficient charge, but 30min driving seems to be needed for 4 green lights.

I would assume a proper double battery charging setup installed in a van would solve a majority of the issues, but then you end up with another cost issue.

Pellenc provide a solar charging solution, but not sure if it’s practicalities and unaware of any other maker providing mobile/vehicle charging solutions ....yet.

Very few take the whole ‘life cost’ into account ( not forgetting all the mining for minerals, processing costs and subsequent toxic battery disposal).

Not saying petrochems is without its eco & cost issues, but the debate is so ‘charged’  ...... :)

We currently take our charger with us daily and plug in at customers whenever possible.  Although it is starting to get knocked about a bit.  Might be worth me buying an additional fast charger and keep the other one at home to use for the overnight charges.
