New Pickups

My Vauxhall Brava double cab, which I've managed to keep running for the 19 years I've been self-employed, had it's first ever full breakdown yesterday. It could be terminal (possibly gear box) as parts are increasingly hard to get hold of and I'm now at the point where I don't think it's worth spending a fortune on, and there are lots of rust spots appearing. I'm looking at replacements and the newer pickups all seem to be 4WD (which I don't need) and incredibly bulky. I mainly carry hand tools, occasionally strimmer/hedgecutter/ladders and don't need to take waste away. The double cab is useful for keeping things clean/dry. Any recommendations greatfully received!

  • Hi well done on getting nearly 2 decades of use from it.  Recent 2WD pickups, especially double cabs, are extremely rare. I always had 2WD single cab Toyota Hilux until my current model, the only practical disadvantage being the bed height is increased a bit. I take waste away so need the bigger load area. Only occasionally do I engage the 4WD mode and am glad to have it when required. The trend in pickups these days certainly seems to be a "Mine is Bigger than Yours" type scenario

    • I'll definitely look at a Hilux if mine is beyond repair. Thanks for your comment.

  • Well, no surprises to those on here that know me, I would always recommend a Hilux. I am on my ninth new Hilux. I got my new one in April this year.

If serviced by the main dealer, they have ten year warranties, which is transferable to the new owner.

In my experience of nine of them, they never break down or give any trouble whatsoever.

As with all modern pickups, they are pricey, both when new and second-hand. But, your money is safe in one because of this fact that they do hold their value.

There is a reason why they are the world’s no.1 selling pickup [excluding the USA].

Presumably you need something quickly, so that puts the pressure on. It’s all dependant on your budget of course.

The modern pickup is a very comfortable and high spec vehicle.

  • Just curious..... why do you not just get a van? Aren't tools a lot safer in the back?   I've been quite lucky with my Transit Connect van ............. bought secondhand 15 years ago and still going strong.

    • I see this quite often when talking about pickups.

You just have a canopy on the back, so all is safely locked away. You don’t have to have the tub open – it’s not compulsory.

The petrol and grass smells are not in the cab with you.

You can fit five people in. So can be used as a family car. [Four of us have recently been up to Northumberland on holiday in my Hilux].

It will drive off road - across wet fields etc. and tow 3500 kilos.

It’s far more comfortable and refined [modern examples] to be in/drive than a van.

Canopy can also be accessed through the [lockable] side windows.

      • I agree with everything you say! The locking mechanism on my canopy broke a while back but I don't generally leave anything of value in there. I'll definitely look at a Hilux but not sure I can stretrch to a new one. I love the colour of yours too, my Brava is green with a white canopy and my clients all love it.

    • I use my pickup as a 'car' too so agree with everything Vic 575 says below.

How much for a new Hi lux ?

    • The list price of mine [above], with that particular spec [Invincible – manual – metallic paint – genuine canopy – tow bar etc.] is about £47k.

I ordered mine 18 months earlier [ordered Oct 21 got it April 23]. It took this long because the factory flooded, destroyed 4000 new Hiluxes and was out of commission for about five months.

However, I am in BASC and so got my 19% discount and then over the 18 month wait, also avoided the further three list price increases.

So I paid £32,991 inc. vat.

Normal discount from the dealer is only about 4%. It used to be 8%, but prices have gone crazy due to supply line problems what with the chip shortage etc.

So BASC is the way to go, normally that is, but because of all the recent issues the BASC discounts have largely vanished. They will come back of course. But currently the BASC discount on a new Hilux is only 10%. Still far better than the 4% from the dealer.

Second-hand prices are very high also. They dealer sold mine [67 reg Invincible with only about 25k on the clock] for just under £25k. But it was in superb condition – wax oiled from new.

The canopies are way cheaper from the main dealer than from the aftermarket retailers.

After market price – about £2500.

Genuine main dealer price – less than £1400.
